Fire Extinguishers

Fire Extinguishers do not replace the need to call 9-1-1.

Fire Extinguishers are not designed to fight large or spreading fires.

Look for the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) label

Types of Fire Extinguishers

There are basicly three main classes of Fire Extinguishers.

  • paper
  • wood

  • drapes
  • upholstery

Flammable liquids such as
  • gasoline

  • flammable gases

Electrical fires involving Class "A" or "B" materials and live electrical power like
  • overheated wiring
  • fuse boxes
  • stoves
  • motors

Your Fire Extinguisher should be installed/placed in plain view, above the reach of childern and near an escape route

Fire Extinguishers should not be placed near stoves or any heating appliances or sources

Fire Extinguisher Usage

You should only use your Fire Extinguisher if
  • the fire is not large or spreading
  • all occupants of the house have been alerted
  • everyone has left the or is leaving the building
  • 9-1-1 has been called
  • you have a clear escape route that won't be blocked by the fire
  • you know how to operate your extinguisher

Don't fight a fire in any other cirumstance. Leave the building immediately, close off the area and call 9-1-1 from a neighbour's home

Use the P.A.S.S system when fighting a fire with a Fire Extinguisher.
